Why I made this website
I thought it fitting to start this website by explaining my purpose for creating it. In short, I need to be able to write my thoughts clearly. This website is an experiment to improve my ability to write and communicate effectively.
In my opinion, sharing ideas effectively is the foundation of all progress. The results of any sort of collective endeavour depends on how well its participants share and receive information. The reason being that in all of these cases, there is a desired result which people are attempting to achieve via their concerted effort. Concerted effort requires agreement on what needs to be done, why it should be done, how it should be done, and who should do it. If objectives, motivations, methods and responsibilities are not agreed upon, concerted effort is not effective and does not lead to the desired outcome in an optimal way.
If I hope to contribute to society in a meaningful way, being proficient at writing and communicating clearly would undoubtedly be valuable. I have not written anything since I left school over 10 years ago. I have since noticed my ability to communicate clearly gradually dissolve into just an ability to write words, with no cohesion or meaningful structure. Even now, this sentence I am writing is only being typed in perhaps the sixth revision of this blog post. That is not good. It is invaluable time wasted and ideas failed to be shared.
Any person is also in much greater need to communicate ideas effectively to his own self than to other people. Thoughts and ideas are messy and chaotic, and being introspective is how a person removes the noise and obtains clarity on the actions he needs to take. If I am to be useful, I am therefore condemned to be a writer.
I end with the following quotes about writing that I find valuable:
“If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them.”
— George Orwell
“Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard.”
— David McCullough
“We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand.”
— C.S. Lewis
